South Beach Diet


The South Beach Diet was created by cardiologist Arthur Agatston with the help of dietician Marie Almon. The original purpose of the south beach diet was to assist in the prevention of heart attacks in Dr. Agatston's own patients. However, once word of the cardiology patients’ amazing weight loss results got out, the diet's popularity quickly spread.

The South Beach Diet works on the theory that bad fats and carbohydrates need to be replaced with good fats and carbohydrates. Foods which contain a lot of refined sugars are cut out of the diet and replaced with such foods as beans, vegetables, and whole grains.

The Three Phases Of The South Beach Diet:

Phase one of the south beach diet is designed to eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches and to jump start your weight loss. During this phase foods such as lean proteins, high fiber veggies, low fat dairy products are encouraged. This phase lasts for a total of two weeks and can produce as much as ten pounds in weight loss.

Phase two of the south beach diet begins after completion of the first one; it is broken up into separate phases and will last until your weight loss goals have been achieved. During this phase, you will be allowed to introduce additional foods into your diet plan. You will eat more fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. During phase two of the south beach diet, it is important to follow your body's cues, if you find that the reintroduction of certain foods causes you to gain back a strong appetite, you will want to eliminate these foods from your diet (Tips are given to make Phase Two more successful, such as not eating fruit during the morning etc).

Phase Three begins after you have achieved your weight loss goal. This phase is intended to help you develop your long-term eating habits as well as make the necessary lifestyle changes. During phase three of the south beach diet you will be able to enjoy even more foods (it includes almost every kind of food), but obviously you will have to pay close attention to your eating habits so you won’t end up gaining weight.
