Low Carb Foods

Low-carb foods are simply foods that are low in carbohydrates. Which, carbohydrates are foods that have high amounts of starch, cellulose, and sugar in them (either occurring naturally or due to processing and being refined). They are not necessarily a bad thing, as they provide a source of energy for our bodies, and are found in just about everything that we eat, to one degree or another. Many diets these days focus on low-carb foods in order to help mitigate weight gain.

There are both good and bad carbohydrates. When you eat the good ones, your blood sugar rises slowly whereas the bad ones can cause your blood sugar to rise quickly, which can make you feel dizzy. If you consume bad carbohydrates, especially on a regular basis, this can intensify the cravings that you have for these types of foods and eventually can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

There are many benefits of consuming low-carb foods, aside from the potential for weight loss, or at least better weight control. Low-carb foods can increase your HDL (good) cholesterol, lower blood insulin levels, and lower blood pressure. Yet another benefit of consuming low-carb foods is that many people report reduced cravings for sweets, which actually helps them to enjoy the full set of benefits from maintaining a low-carb diet.

Low carb foods can include vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, green beans, artichokes, cauliflower and cabbage. Apples, strawberries, grapefruit, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, cantaloupe and peaches are among the low-carb fruits that you can enjoy. Other low carb foods are cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan, swiss, provolone and ricotta. You can also add chicken, lobster, veal, tuna, salmon, turkey and sardines to the list. Other options might include low carb protein supplements (powders, bars) and other healthy snacks. Please note that these were just a few examples to show that you do not need to sacrifice good taste when you choose to eat low carb foods.

By choosing low-carb foods over the less-healthful alternatives, you can recreate the way you eat. Because a great deal of what we eat occurs out of habit rather than hunger, all it takes is a small decision on your end and you can reap the benefits of better health and well-being.
