Good Fats


Good fats such as essential fatty acids (EFA) are the type of fats that people should be consuming. These types of good fats are imperative for our health. Since our bodies do not create good fats automatically, they must be consumed through foods or food supplements

Omega 3 is a good choice for good fats. It can be found in fish (fish oil), some plants and vegetables such as flax seeds. Omega 3 can also be consumed as a supplement (learn more here). Unfortunately, many people don’t get enough of this because they prefer to consume processed foods, as a result they end up consuming a lot of saturated fats, which is really inappropriate for them.

Omega 6 is also another choice for good fats. It can be found in many type of oils (corn and sunflower oil etc), walnuts and pumpkin seeds.

Please note that you should consume one gram of omega 3 for every 4 grams of omega 6. Most diets get a sufficient amount of omega 6 but not omega 3, as a result you should aim to take more supplements of Omega 3 than omega 6.

It is advised that people that suffer from heart disease should consume at least one gram of omega 3 each day. Also, it’s a good idea to consume at least two servings of fish per week. Fish are a great source of Omega 3. However, caution has to be exercised when eating fish because of their high mercury concentrations. There are other alternatives to such good fats such as flax seed oil or primrose oil.

Good fats are also great for people that suffer from osteoporosis (help them to regain strength in their bodies and bones).  In a nutshell, the more people concentrate on consuming good fats, the healthier they will become.
