Ephedra Diet Pills

Ephedra diet pills include ephedra, which is also commonly called ma huang, and is an herbal remedy that has been used in China for thousands of years. In Chinese medicine this herbal treatment is used for many conditions, including asthma and other breathing disorders. Ephedra diet pills are not used for these purposes though, and instead are used to speed up your metabolism and cause you to lose weight because of the stimulant effect of Ephedra.

In the United States the sale of Ephedra diet pills has been banned. Because of this ban it is not possible to buy these pills in local stores, but unfortunately they are still available in many cases over the Internet using online ordering and mail or private shipping. The FDA ban on Ephedra diet pills took place on April 12, 2004, when evidence of serious problems with this substance became overwhelming and impossible for the public to ignore. A previous ban attempt on Ephedra by the FDA in the late nineties was shot down.

Ephedra Related Deaths

The FDA ban on Ephedra diet pills came about because of the number of deaths and other serious problems that were related to products containing Ephedra. It was determined that some of the reports and complaints received by the makers of these products about adverse effects and medical problems were not made available when the first ban by the FDA was proposed.

There were a number of famous athletes, including both a major league football player and a baseball player, whose deaths were attributed at least in part to Ephedra diet pills. This was one of the reasons why the second attempt at banning these products was successful.

Safety Concerns

Ephedra diet pills have a large number of safety concerns associated with them. In addition to contributing to sudden death these products can also cause other serious medical problems. Strokes, heart attacks, seizures, paralysis, irregular heartbeats, and even psychosis have been some of the more serious medical problems associated with Ephedra diet pills.

Unpleasant Side Effects

Ephedra diet pills have also been associated with unpleasant side effects that range from mild to moderate. Dizziness, itching, skin irritation and severe rashes, nervousness, and extreme sweating can occur when you take this supplement. You are also at risk for dehydration, hypertension, headaches, trouble sleeping, irritability, trembling, itching, vomiting, and other unwanted side effects if you take Ephedra diet pills.
